Loretta Yajima, our founder, dreamed of creating a place where Hawaii’s children can dream big dreams and know that their dreams can come true. Our team of enthusiastic volunteers, friendly interns, and dedicated staff make Loretta’s dream possible every day.

We’ve got several ways that you can get involved in helping make our keiki’s dreams come true.
Volunteers
Our volunteers, affectionately known as PALs – People Assisting Learning – are committed to the Center’s mission. Our volunteers are extremely important members of our team who do everything from assisting with mailings or helping at special events, to facilitating exploration and discovery in our exhibit galleries.
We have volunteer opportunities for:
• Adults of all ages
• Youths ages 15-17
• College interns
• Community organizations

Internships
Interning at the Hawaii Children's Discovery Center can be a rewarding experience for reliable, mature, hard-working and friendly youth ages 16+. Make a difference in the lives of Hawaii’s keiki while gaining valuable skills in child care, education, and working in a museum setting.

Intern in one of three areas during the summer or other school breaks:

Discovery Camp-Support our camp teachers with materials, classroom management and curriculum, and assist with meals and gallery play. Perfect for those interested in working with elementary-aged children.

Early Childhood-Assist classroom teachers with preschool curriculum, support classroom setup and cleanup, and help supervise gallery play and pick-up and drop-off. Ideal for those passionate with preschool-aged children.

Exhibit Facilitator-Engage with the entire family on our museum floor and assist staff with prepping the galleries at the end of the day. For those who enjoy working with both children and families.
