Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does the Center receive City or State funding?

The Discovery Center is a private 501c3 non-profit organization. We do not receive any city or state funding to support operations. Operating support comes from ticket sales, workshops and programs, birthday parties, facility rentals, revenue from the Center's gift shop "Just For You, Kid!" and from special event fundraising. In addition, donations from individuals, gifts and grants, and in-kind contributions are necessary to help us fund the cost of operations and programs.

2. Why do you charge an admission?

The admission price for a child to visit the Center is $6.75, but the actual cost to the Center is closer to $12.00 per person. The Children's Discovery Center is a non-profit community organization that strives to create experiences that spark imagination and learning through play. Due to the generosity of many individuals and organizations, the Center is able to subsidize 44% of this cost, providing a valuable experience at a reasonable price.

3. Is there a baby changing area in the building?

There are changing counters in both the men's and woman's restrooms located in our lobby area. For sanitary reasons, parents are not allowed to change their children outside of these areas.

4. Can I bring food and drinks inside the building?

In order for us to keep our facility clean, food and beverages are not allowed inside the Center. There are several child-friendly restaurants in the neighborhood, and visitors may leave for a meal and return to the Center as long as they have their hand stamped. We are also located in the beautiful Kakaako Waterfront Park that is the perfect setting for a picnic outside.

5. Is the Center wheelchair accessible?

The Children's Discovery Center has a ramp entrance along Cook Street. We are wheelchair accessible throughout the entire facility.

6. Why do I have to park my stroller?

Due to the unique environment and space available in our Center, we cannot allow strollers in the exhibit galleries. A large number of strollers in the building prevents children from moving about the exhibit galleries freely and enables us to accommodate large groups. The only strollers allowed in the building are for individuals with special needs. Any stroller found in the building without a special tag will be brought to the lobby stroller parking area. The Discovery Center is not responsible for any personal belongings left in the stroller.

7. Is there a public pay phone in the building?

We have a pay phone located in the lobby of our building.
